Spirit of S. W. Durkee, Well Known Citizen, Takes Its Flight

OLDEST BUSINESS MAN OF BEAVER DAM

Dies on Anniversary of His Seventy Eighth Birthday.

Beaverdarm, Ohio April 29—

S. W Durkee prominent citizen and business man of this place passed away at his home Monday evening at 9 30 o clock after an illness of several months duration caused by paralysis. He passed to his eternal home on the day of his 78th birthday anniversary. Although the family had been fore-warned of his death it came as a terrible blow to them and especially to his aged wife. He came to Beaverdam in 1835, the year of his birth and when he became a young man he went to Massachusetts where he remained a number of years and it was here he was wedded to Miss Burgess at Wartham Mass. Together they came here and went into the grocery business. Mr. Durkee was the oldest business man in this place and the oldest member of the I O O F lodge. He was presented with a 25-year veteran pin several years ago and upon the celebration of their golden wedding anniversary the lodge presented him with a beautiful gold handled cane. Their golden wedding anniversary was publicly celebrated in the town hall on July 4 1907. Hundreds of guests were present.

He was a member of the Church of Christ in which church the funeral services will be held, conducted by the I O O F lodge. He is survived by two sons, Louis O of this place and Thomas of San Francisco Calif. The former son has been a business partner with his father for ? years. His wife and five daughters are Mrs Albert Shull, Mrs Harry Snook Mrs A . Combs of Lima, and Mrs Reeves, of Pittsburgh. Five other children have preceded him to the higher world. The arrangements for the funeral services have not been made as they have not heard from relatives at a distance.
