John W. Nicoline



Lima Soldier Died in Japan

John W. Nicoline Stricken with Smallpox

Pfc. John W. Nicoline, son of John Nicoline and the late Mrs. Pauline Nicoline, 506 W. Vine st., died Jan. 8 in an Army hospital in Japan as the result of a smallpox hemorrhage, his father and family were notified by the War department Saturday. Nicoline's death was the second in the family in the past six months. His mother died while he was serving overseas.

A veteran of the South Pacific area, Pfc. Nicoline recently arrived in Japan with the 32nd "Red Arrow" Infantry Division. Serving with that unit, he saw action in battles at Buna, Saidor, Aitape, Morotai, Leyte and Luzan prior to his post-war service in Japan. he holds the Philippine Liberation medal, and other infantryman's badges.

Nicoline entered service in October, 1944, training at Ft. McClellan, Ala., and went overseas in April, 1945. Surviving, in addition to his father, are two sisters, Joan Nicoline and Mrs. Louis Sunderhaus, both at the Vine St. residence.
