Darren William Scott



Darren William Scott, 39, died at 12:38 a.m. July 26, 2003, at his residence.

He was born Aug. 25, 1963, in Lima to Steve and Dixie Hinson Scott Jr., his mother survives in Lima. On July 6, 1991, he married Lynne E. Miller, who survives.

Mr. Scott was associate director of admissions at Ohio Northern University, Ada, and was a substitute teacher for Ada schools and several Allen County schools.

He was co-owner of Good Shepherd Boarding Kennel. He was a member of Salem Mennonite Church. He was a member of the Skyline Chili Ambassador Club. He was a 1982 graduate of Elida High School, where he was on the wrestling team, winning numerous Western Buckeye League awards and tournaments, and was a state contender twice. He was a 1987 graduate of ONU, where he was a four-time All-American wrestler, and was the 1987 Division III National Champion in the 134-pound weight class. He received his master's degree in counseling in 1993 from the University of Dayton. He was one of the carriers of the Olympic torch in 2002, when it came through Lima.

He spoke to numerous organizations about his faith in light of his battle with Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS). He enjoyed fishing and the outdoors.

Survivors also include a sister, Diana (Don) Leedom of Elida; maternal grandmother, Ruth Hinson of Lima; a nephew, Zachary Leedom; and a niece.

Memorial services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Ohio Northern University Sports Center. Tim Benjamin and the Rev. Mel Hathaway will officiate. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Salem Mennonite Church or Key Life Ministries (www.keylife.org). Condolences may be sent to chiles@wcoil.com
