Jesse R. and Grace M. Shepherd

FUMES CLAIM ELDERLY PAIR

An elderly couple was found dead in their bed Monday night by their son-in-law, who forced his way into their house when they didn't answer his knock.

Jesse R. Shepherd, 73 and his 71 year old wife, Grace apparently died during their sleep Sunday night. Death was to asphyxiation, police report.

The son-in-law, Ralph Zerbe, Rt 5, called the officers to the couple's home at 818 Findlay Road at 6:22 p. m. He had discovered them minutes earlier.

The Shepherds recently returned from a Florida trip and apparently, during their absence, birds entered the chimney of their home, fell into the flue and blocked it; police said. Fumes from a heating stove were unable to escape though the chimney and filled the house as the couple was sleeping, police theorized, causing them to suffocate.

Mr. Shepherd was born Aug. 21, 1891 in Montezuma, Oh and had lived in Lima for 49 years. His parents were Nathaniel and Vinnie Colson Shepherd. He was a retired carpenter-contractor. Mrs. Shepherd was born Oct 21, 1893 in Fort Loramie. She was the daughter of Jeremiah and Alice Chambers.

Surviving are two daughters Mrs. Ralph (Opal) Zerbe of Rt. 5; and Mrs. Dorsey (Arbula) Greeno of Findlay; four grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Mr. Shepherd was a brother to Charles Shepherd of 657 N. Union and Cary Shepherd of 1017 N. Adams St.; and Mrs. Maggie House of Portland, IN.

Mrs. Shepherd has two surviving sisters; Mrs. Cary (Nora) Shepherd of 1017 N. Adams St.; and Mrs. Hazel Wires of 1307 Findlay Road.

Mr. and Mrs. Shepherd were members of the First Assembly of God Church.

Friends may call at the residence after 7 tonight and until 1:00 p. m. Thursday when the bodies will be removed to the church, where services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Rev. T. E. Hartshorn and Rev. Moses Vogh will officiate and burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are being directed by Chiles and Sons-Laman Funeral Home.
